Fishing For More


This is a Tai-yaki, the ever delicious fish-shaped cake that is usually filled with sweet beans. But this one is even better (in my opinion)....it's filled with purple yam!!!

I really wanted to show you how purple the yam is inside...but it was so good, I forgot to take a photo before eating it all. Oops. Well, you'll have to take my word for it...the sweet and munchy fish was delicious!

A lot of high school kids buy it on their way home with friends or little kids beg their mom to stop and buy some on the way back from the grocery store. The Tai-yaki is really popular with everyone.

As for me...I can't wait to get another one to snack on while taking a walk around Shinjuku with my camera!

    In the Philippines the purple yam is called ube and it very popular... there is even ube ice cream. This one is NOT a yummy for me... :-D

    It looks so scrumptious as it is but purple yams! Oh my. Looks like you lucked out with a little batter overflow there above its back.

    It looks so lifelike, as if it could just about swim away.

    Ha, ha, you sound like a friend of mine who bought me a chocolate bunny for Easter last year, but then confessed to eating it before she could give it to me! Such an interesting combination of flavors in this dish!

    Thanks for the comments, everyone! It seems some of you have tried it already! Had no idea they had puple yam in the Philipines!

    We call it Beni-imo (紅芋), which roughly translates to "red yam" and is mostly produced in Okinawa!

    I hope the store opens up soon so I can take a picture of all the purple yumminess before I eat it ;D
