Hits the Spot


I don't know about where you are but summer has hit us full force! I just came back home and it was 35C inside my apartment. So hot.

On a day like this Hiyakake Udon (cold broth with udon noodles) is a great way to cool down. Hiyakake (冷かけ) means "pour cold," which refers to the cold broth they pour over the udon.

My udon dish also had Daikon Oroshi (大根おろし), which is shredded white radish, and a small citrus fruit called Sudachi (酢橘) on top. We squeeze the juice from the Sudachi and mix it into the broth before eating.

There is also a wide variety of tempura you can choose from, everything from fish to veggies. The Kabocha (かぼちゃ) or pumpkin tempura is one of my favorites.

It's so good, I could eat here every day! (and I sometimes do...)

  4. I've never had cold noodles, but it does sound ideal for these hot summer days. 35C is too hot, it's never reached that at my house. Which is good, because we don't have air conditioning!

  6. That looks so refreshing and appetizing! miam, miam. Look forward to trying it out but first I'll have to find a restaurant in Montreal that serves that. In the meantime, do keep those food posts coming, once in a while.

    Had to get a translation for 35C. Oh gosh, inside? That's brutal. But I have lived in places without A/C, and ice was a good friend.

  11. Wow, that dish holding the kabo-ten looks exactly like the dishes at Marugame Seimen :-).

    I'll have to keep that chain in mind when I visit japan again. It looks scrumptious.

  16. Looks good to me! I like the noodles and radish. But you can keep the sudachi (we call it kalamansi in the Philippines and we have a tree in our yard)... I like to make juice out it, but not to squeeze it onto foods. It's always hot in Manila, but not unbearably so... it's the rainy season and that cools the air.
