A Moment of Silence
Today we will observe a moment of silence at 2:46pm.
Last year March 11th was a Friday and I was waiting for the subway with my boss at Nishi Shinjuku Station, planning to head to a forum, when the alarmingly loud buzzer sounded, signalling an earthquake to come. And it did.
Last Friday, I was once again standing at the same station with a co-worker, heading to the same forum that I ended up never reaching last year. This year, the subway came rolling into the station and we got on, heading to the forum.
But my heart was beating a mile a minute.

Our hearts were with you at this time Kaori, it was a very moving sight seeing so many young people lined along the spot were the tsunami came in. I can understand why your heart was beating so fast.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine that, as I've never experienced a real earthquake (and don't want to). I'm thinking of Japan this week and hoping for the country's recovery.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing that it's been one year. In some ways it seems like much longer than that and in others it seems like it was just yesterday.
ReplyDeleteOne year, I hope people feel a little better now...
ReplyDeleteThis weekend, my thoughts are with you. I read a short essay about Miyatojima island this morning, and I think it's a lovely story about generational wisdom: http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-holguin-veras-tsunami-20120311,0,1967271.story
ReplyDeleteA felt entry indeed. Incredible sight of the city. Please have you all a good new week ahead.
ReplyDeleteI can understand both the minute of silence and your heart beating a mile a minute. It can't be easy to remember. I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to lose loved ones and everything one owns, and then have to start building a new life from nothing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by, Kaori! We must have some kind of telepathy; it just happens I returned home to Manila today. And then I read a lovely travel article
that mentions Shinjuku. I don't know that I'll have time for regular blogging, but I hope to post a few times while I'm home for a sanity break. :-) I see you're not posting as often, too, but I hope that means you're happy busy.
My heart broke for Japan during that tragedy! I will continue to pray for y'alls recovery, but I know that it is something that you will never forget. There will always be a scar.
ReplyDeleteTime flies. It was such a tragedy.
ReplyDeleteI remember the shock and sorrow of last year so well, and how constantly restless the earth was.
ReplyDeleteI noticed Sky Tree in your photo. I also remember walking home through the shitamachi on the 11th last year, dazedly wondering if Sky Tree was OK ...
Well, it was and is and so is Japan. This country and its people are made of strong stuff.
Didn't realize it's been a year...our thoughts are with your country as you all continue to clean up and to rebuild
ReplyDeleteMme. la Vache's mother, brother and son are in Japan. We certainly remembered that horrible day!
ReplyDeleteMy sister and I commemorated the day too. Our prayers are with you all still.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it's been over a year...
