Dare To Move

Guess what?

Some of our escalators that have not been used since spring this year, due to the power conservation this summer, has started to operate again! It's funny how weird it is to actually see these escalators move.

Don't you love the top photo and how they used a whole bunch of yellow tape to stop anyone from using the escalator? As if the sign weren't enough.

But I guess now that the major heatwaves season is over, we'll be seeing less of these signs around the city. Or at least until the winter comes and we'll all be using power again to keep warm.

  1. Where I live, when an escalator isn't working they don't close it off. You can still walk up or down it if you want. Hopefully the power problems will ease off now that the hottest weather is over.

  3. This brought to mind walking up stationary escalators at a Bangkok department store in 1989. I thought of how conscientious Japanese people were, and how I often saw workers performing maintenance on escalators in Tokyo. "Huh. Immovable escalators in Thailand. This would never happen in Japan,” I thought.

I suppose the escalators in Bangkok this past summer have all been performing admirably.

  6. Here they usually do not close elevators when they are off, people can walk them anyway...

  7. That is interesting to note that the escalators are blocked off when they aren't operating. Maybe they would be damaged over time if they were used like regular stairs? There is a joke about escalators. I know that I have heard one. Probably something Seinfeld said and sadly, his sarcasm doesn't translate well to the written word.

  8. I guess they really wanted to keep people off that escalator!

  9. I prefer stairs to escalators, but like others, I wonder why you couldn't walk up the stationary escalator. Also, in some buildings, there aren't enough normal stairs...?

  10. Great question. According to the Building Standard Law, there are certain requirements for "stairs" (ex. Staircase has to be over 140cm wide, under 18cm in height, etc.) and as escalators don't meet these requirements, we're not permitted to use them as stairs. Also, even though everyone does it, according to the Japan Escalator Association, we are actually not suppose to climb up escalators, even when they are moving. So unless it's a emergency where only escalators are available, we are not allowed to use the escalators as stairs and are required to use regular stairs or elevators. Which is fine...we've all pretty much gotten used to it now :-)
