These crafted round fans are called Uchiwa (pronounced Ooh-chi-wah).
This is a must in our office these days. When the temperature rises our office gets quite stuffy. And with the air conditioning set at 28C, these uchiwas are in full use in the afternoon!
This is a small cafe that only had these Uchiwa and a fan sitting on the floor, but with the windows opened, it was surprisingly breezy and felt great. Wish our office could open our windows, too!
certainly a colorful uchiwa. ^0^
ReplyDeletebut when the weather's unbearably hot, it's best to have a cool fan.
What a nice shot!
ReplyDeleteOk, so 28C is 82F -- that's pretty hot without moving air. I hate that office buildings and hotels built after X year lack windows that open and close. There is one experimental building in LA that has something called a breathing skin and does allow fresh air to circulate.
These Uchiwa are so elegant, I can just imagine the small cafe...
ReplyDeleteThey are so pretty Koari! I sure could use one of those today.
ReplyDelete28c!!!! That's the outside temperature here. I'm sure those fans are getting good use. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo. It looks more like a traditional Japanese crafts display than a cafe. Speaking of crafts, it is so impressive how the handle and blade of the fans are made of a single slat of bamboo that has been split into nearly 40 segments at the top. That simple stuff bamboo can be put to many uses, especially when utilized so adeptly by master craftsmen.
ReplyDeleteI love those fans, they're so elegant. Our office can get quite stuffy at times too.
ReplyDeleteI'm in Dallas, TX and we are having a heat wave here! We've also been asked to keep the thermostat set high and conserve energy to avoid rolling blackouts. I can't wait for summer to end! Hope you stay cool!!
ReplyDeletevery colorful and useful fans for hot days
ReplyDelete粋なうちわで涼む活気のあるオフィスと都会の夜 どちらも素敵ですね。
ReplyDeleteSometimes a fan and an open window are all you need Kaori, my daughter carries a hand fan in her bag at all times.
ReplyDeleteIs it still very hot in Japan?
ReplyDeleteHmmm... I was here yesterday... did I leave without a comment? Want to exchange your heat with our 97% humidity wet? Naah, let's both trade with someone enjoying 24C dry sunny warmth... LOL!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pics. Stay cool...
