I've always liked looking at the globe. Seeing how close or far we all are.
This one was turned so we could see North America (北アメリカ). Most of the country or city names are written in the Japanese Katakana writing, which is often used to transcribe foreign words. I think it's funny how you almost can't see the border because the area is packed with katakana writing.
That is so interesting Kaori! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI had one of these, a simpler one, when I was a kid and I dreamed a lot about the strange countries that were on it. In these digital times it is not so easy to find a globe around: we dream on screens now...
ReplyDeleteI love globes, too. Why don't I have one? Must remedy that.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it interesting how countries rename other countries? For example, why in English to we call Deutschland, Germany, or Norsk, Norway, or Nihon, Japan?
Yes, I see exactly what you mean! :)
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a map of North America labeled in Japanese before - what a fun post!
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty amazing that they can fit in so much writing on there!
ReplyDeleteAt first I thought it was a typo but I see now that Japanese people refer to San Jose as “San Noze.”
ReplyDeleteMy little book-map of Tokyo served as a kind of sheaf of treasure maps that could help me to decipher the arcane locations of otherwise unknowable destinations, most of which I still treasure. Now Google Maps and Google Earth do it for me.
Speaking of maps I thought it would be good to have one like this, but wouldn’t you know, it hasn’t been released yet. Just my luck! (Ha ha).
Oh, the joy of playing with a globe. Nice pic.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lovely shot!
ReplyDeletethe globe in katakana.
ReplyDeletehaha, cool it is. ^0^
I share your fascination with globes... although oddly, I don't have one. That doesn't stop me from globe trotting, though. LOL! Well, as VP points out, these days we find out maps online... and even the large atlas books I have rarely get opened any more. I see what you mean about the lost border!
ReplyDelete[Thanks much for IDing the Japanese food in my post. I updated it. xo]
