Beer Run

For some reason this advertisement appeals to me and I don't even drink beer.

Kirin Brewery is one of our major brewery companies here in Japan. Some of their warehouses in the Tohoku area were damaged by the tsunami following the 3.11 Earthquake. One of the major worries among my co-workers when they heard of this was whether we would have enough beer for everyone this summer. I think they were more worried about the lack of beer than water or food.

But it seems we have plenty this summer. Kampai! (That's "cheers" in Japanese)

  2. I've had a Kirin now and then... not bad. ;-) I prefer my beer from a glass bottle, not an aluminum can. This guy sure conveys the enjoyment you can get from a nice cold one. Until I went to China in the mid-80s, I did not drink beer at all. But after hours in meetings that served only bitter tea, with neither coffee not bottled water available till many years later, I learned to drink the frothy stuff, usually local brew, sometimes the famous Tsingtao beer. The only alternative was pop/soda, and that sweet stuff I don't drink to this day. I understand why your beer-drinking co-workers would be concerned. Kampai! (Ganbei in Mandarin.)

  3. 犬の鳴き声はワンワンでしょう?麒麟の鳴き声は何ですか。

    麒麟の鳴き声はゴクゴクだよー。

That’s one of my favorites but no one else seems to find it remotely interesting... Oh well. Back to the drawing board; or maybe I’ll just draw a cool draft. I certainly have been inspired to do that, thank you.

Imagine that someone is holding that frothy glass of beer back there, and to a “Da, Da, da da da” rhythm that person kind of dances the glass around with their hand (interesting that we can sometimes use plurals for singulars in English). Now, what would that be?

    Awa Odori!

    大根のお新香は一本で百万円かかったら、あれは何ですか?

    「ぜいたくあん」!

  7. I do not drink bear either, but a long time ago I collected beer cans and one of my favorite possessions was a nice set of Kirin beer cans!

  9. Kampai! I don't think I can distinguish Kirin from another bear (shame to say!).

  11. I always liked the name Kirin because it's just one letter away from me. Agree -- this is appealing.

  12. It looks like he is doing a happy beer dance. I just see him about to put his hand on his belly and swivel his hips and take tiny, shuffling steps as he shimmies around in a circle all while holding his beer up high for all to see. It is a great photo and makes me smile, but it can't make me drink beer. Yuck! - I can understand how people would fear having to go without beer; I would be the same if it involved coffee. But not just any coffee, that would be Dunkin' Donuts French Vanilla. All the rest is just dirt water.
