Spice Up Your Life

Soup Curry is one of my absolutely favorite dishes.

It's a dish that became popular in the Sapporo area and soon spread to various parts of Japan. Like the name says, it's a curry soup filled with vegetables, chicken, and/or pork, which you eat with rice.

Dominica is a soup curry specialty restaurant in Sapporo and they opened this branch in Shinjuku this spring. Actually, they opened this store on March 11, which was the day of the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. I read somewhere that they had to close the store down for a couple of days after, but have since resumed their regular hours.

They have 3 different soup to choose from: the original Yellow soup, the tomato base Red soup, and the pork base Black soup. You can also choose if you want vegetables, chicken mix, or pork mix.

Since I'm a vegetarian I got the yellow soup with the vegetables. You can also specify how spicy you want the soup to be. The scale ranges from 1 to 10, which is mild to I-don't-want-to-feel-anything-in-my-mouth hot. I'm a wimp so I got a 3. It was the perfect blend of curry spice and vegetable sweetness and I was beyond full at the end of the meal.

Have you ever had soup curry before? If you're ever in Shinjuku, you should definitely stop by!

  1. Dinner time is not that far here, but I probably miss most of the ingredients... and the skill to put them together! It looks very yummy, though!

  2. Looks good Kaori! I would probably order the vegetables too, but I'm a huge wimp and would have to go with a 1.

  4. Don’t worry. Those aren’t sonic booms from half the Japanese Self-Defense Air Force jets zooming over Shinjuku, it’s just that you made my stomach rumble here in California. That looks so good. Okra, egg, lotus root, onion, cabbage, daikon, carrot, (burdock root?), turmeric rice...

I see that Dominika is just down the same street from a “Mexican” restaurant (now gone?) we used to go to in the basement of the Pegasus Building. I’ll look for the basement at Disk Union near the corner of Meiji Street. I’ll probably go with your choice but if I have a couple packs of handi-tissue maybe I’ll kick it up to 6. Wait, that could be dangerous. Tissue is flammable, isn’t it?

  5. Yes, yes, yes. And you made it look and sound so good. I always go for #10, though sometimes live to regret it.

  8. I don't think I'd ever manage to make this even if I did find the ingredients! Lunchtime is slowly coming up though, this is cruel! :-)

  9. Great pic, and great find... having a strong connection to Sapporo, soup curry's always a good recipe to see being spread around. Having said that, I don't have it as much as I'd like.

    Thanks.

  10. YUM!! Yes, I've had curry soup before, but I don't know, of course, how authentic it was. Definitely a soup I'd have again. Medium spicy.
