This is a type of orchid we call "Kocho-ran (胡蝶蘭)" in Japanese.
They are really gorgeous and smell heavenly. In Japan, this Orchid plant is often given as gifts to celebrate new companies or a launching of something.
These Orchid plants have long branches that droop over where the big flowers are growing neatly in a row. And it's a known fact, although I'm not sure if it's still true, that each branch costs about 10,000 yen. (About $100...or a little less now with the high yen rate.) Isn't that ridiculously expensive?
Most of these Orchid plants in the photo bellow had 5 branches each!
Gorgeous! I'll just enjoy your photos though. That's a little too $$ for me. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, those are beautiful! I can see why they would be so expensive, look at all that perfectly symmetrical loveliness!
ReplyDeleteWe have several orchids in my office as both my assistant and I love them! We've even had some luck to get them to rebloom!
ReplyDeleteSuch delicate wonders and terrific visual treats. If I had more money, I, too, would have many of these in my home.
ReplyDeleteSimply beautiful !!
ReplyDeleteOh, very expensive but so beautiful flowers! They are worth more than 50000Yen ・・・?Probably I will buy new dress or dine in a fancy restaurant ・・・? 花より団子のsnowwhiteです。
ReplyDeleteI have never seen so many beautiful (and expensive) orchids...
ReplyDeleteLovely! I did notice while in Japan that every plant at the florist had branches were arranged vertically. I wonder why. Anyway, that seems very expensive.
ReplyDeleteI love orchids. Their fragrance is quite subtle, elegant even.
ReplyDeleteLooking at your bottom photo I imagine maiko wanting to replace wisteria kanzashi with orchids.
I'm so happy they have a gorgeous smell Kaori, quite often beautiful blooms have no smell and I always think that's a shame. Have a lovely weekend.
ReplyDeleteHi everyone! Thanks so much for the comments!
ReplyDeleteThe flowers were gorgeous...so many lining the entrance hall. I guess a lot of companies were sending their congratulations.
I'm not sure why the flowers are so expensive, either because it's a rare flower or maybe it takes a lot of care to grow them. Either way the really do smell fabulous and look quite unique :D
Expensive and beautiful! The white is so pure...
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely image, Kaori. This would make a fine subject for a watercolor painting.
ReplyDeleteWow! Stunning! I love orchids, but I have far from a green thumb and would be scared to try and maintain one for fear I'd kill the beautiful plant.
