The Sign

This is the sign for Edogawabashi-dori, or Edogawabashi Street, which you can see behind it.

The sign also includes Shinjuku's city emblem in the upper right. The emblem was established in 1967 and it is actually a rhombus-shaped form of the kanji "Shin (新)," which means "New" and is also one of the kanji for our city name, Shinjuku (新宿).

  1. I only learned regretably a small collection of kanji during my two years in Gifu-ken but I was good at Hiragana at one time....

  2. A beautiful and fascinating sign! Please, be patient and try always to explain your different types of characters to us, I find it very interesting.

  3. I remember my Dad telling me how he used to get hopelessly lost in Tokyo... :-) This is brilliant and thank you for the explanations.

  4. Speaking of puzzles, I’d hate to tell you how long it took me to figure this one out. I do love puzzles, on occasion, but this one was a doozie. I guess it just wasn’t where I expected it to be.

You didn’t have much “wiggle room” behind you, when you took this photo, did you, Kaori? That alone makes yours an exceptional photo.

  6. 実話、にほんっごのかんじをべんきょしています。 ^0^ haha, but the words can be quite confusing, esp. when you also know some chinese words. I get them jumbled up.

  7. Elegant street sign. (Would have fit well into Lesley's Sign meme.)
