Love It Or Hate It

You never know what kind of fashion you'll see at the glittery karaoke box lobby!

The guy on the left is wearing "sarrouel pants," which I hear is originally a type of Islamic ethnic wear...but leave it to fashion to take it to another level. It's really popular this season in Japan. What do you think?

See other wonderful reflections from around the world at Weekend Reflections hosted by James.

  1. Fashion is a fickled thing. Kinda cool, I guess. Love how fashion spreads across cultures.

  3. Hmmm. I think it looks sloppy but I understand that some people dress to make a statement. Not sure what that statement is, though.

  4. I'm not a fashion expert - I'm strictly a jeans and t-shirt guy. At work I dress up - I wear jeans and a polo shirt! But this fashion wouldn't work in my town, I think you'd certainly draw attention, and it would probably be the wrong kind.

  5. Well...the great thing about fashion here in Tokyo is that the cycle is extremely fast! So we probably won't be around to see these pants next spring.

In their defense, they are very loose and comfy, no matter how weird they look ;D

  6. It probably depends by the age (mine!) but I never liked short pants of any kind. And I live in a city by the sea...

  8. We had a manager at my workplace in the early 1990s (Soon after the Tokyo Metro Gov Center was completed, nearly twenty years ago!) who wore those. We called her the “bag lady” for her fashion sense. Will I really go from despising them to having to get a pair of the men’s style? Can I use the same razor I use on my face to shave my legs? Ha ha.

  10. Don't think I can give a short answer to your question. Hate it would definitely be way too strong a word, but like others here, I don't find these baggy men's shorts aesthetically pleasing to my eye. Still, they don't offend. On the issue of fashion, I give very wide berth; to each their own. Only some very extremes need to be curbed so as not to [overly] offend local cultural standards. I've never been a slave to the fashion dictators myself, though, and rarely wear anything with a brand on it (some things are hard, like tennis shoes). Having said all that... great reflections, Kaori!

  12. I wonder what MC Hammer would have to say about this trend. (Must say that I don’t approve of his uncouth language).

  13. This is really close to what our manager wore in the early 1990s here. The word “horrid” was used at the site I found them.

    Fashion is subjective. Tastes change.

Anyway I think I have just the right shoes for that guy above in your photo.

I think you might hate it too...!!!

  15. Ha ha ha. You really had me there, Kaori. This guy is really just wearing a shirt around his waist, like here, right?

  16. One wonders if he has ever done any posing for Kuniyoshi, like on the right, here.

And check out the guy in the white jacket. He looks good in those black knee pants.

  17. Interesting, I wonder if I will be seeing any people walking around with that around here. =)

    Great find!

  18. As a cultural norm, fine. As a fashion statement, YUCK.
